Claire Denis and Barry Jenkins on Beau Travail
The two directors discuss the film over video call touching on various themes and tones within the film. Their chat is casual but wildly informative about Denis’ process and the production of Beau Travail. Barry Jenkins fresh from watching the George Floyd footage mirrors the events reflected in the film adding a fascinating layer to the conversation.

They remind me of my grandparents from the Basque Country, and my best friend’s Irish mom from Long Island. God, I miss them.
Why did Americans cover their furniture in plastic.😁
1974 ..... FIFTY years ago, OMG. Watching this feels like yesterday to me, like no time has past. This is the era I knew best. In the early 1980s while living in NYC, I became good friends with 2 cousins-both from families very similar to the one depicted in this film. Both thier familes were NYC Italian Americans and I would spend time with thier families in Bronx. I'm not from NYC and am not Italian but I used to love going to their family homes. It was so differnt than my own family .... so different.
choich.
What is the instrument playing during the title at 2:35?
His mother was great in Goodfellas!
I would not wanna be under the influence and in that kitchen with that wallpaper 😵💫
Still now they beg to come to America, not much has changed
Being of Italian heritage this is 100% authentic. Now, my grandmother was from AC (that's Atlantic City, NJ) and had moved to south Florida back in the '30's, so I was raised there but we would spend summers in South Jersey, Philly and go into Manhattan. My aunts (Nunzi and Rita) had plastic on the sofas just like Mrs. S here, my grandmother kept white sheets over her furniture and would yell at me when I sat on them LOL. I REALLY wanted to see what Mrs. Scorsese put in her sauce and yes, we always called it "sauce" never gravy.
Scorsese's mother was a number 😂
Don’t put too many onions in the sauce.
i dislike these people so much mouth and no class
Fascinating conversation. It’s like I’m in the room with them. Each amazing. As a couple. Wow.
His mom sounds so badass
Lol! Love it! My Sicilian Grandparents lived 5 houses from us growing up. Memories are flooding back watching this!
I can’t tell you how much this did my heart good, we need more of this Thankyou sincerely
Good bless his mother and father
My muthah used to sew payants 👌
She looks absolutely amazing!
I miss my babka
Of all his great films, this must be the most cherished. Amazingly accurate look into Italian 20th century life in America.
Totally agree. A treasure. Makes Casino look like a cartoon
My favorite line is when she’s talking about the boy from Naples and she says “I would’ve taken him, what’s the difference.”. ❤️
I wish this was longer
where is marty big brother?? ....
"Her mother had 9 children" any other Sicilians have huge families like my 9 aunts and uncles lol
Beautifull piece of history
Luv the Nuw Yawk accent❤
No pasta? my parents used potato. Go frank yourself if that aint county Italiano!
If you watch this whole thing, you realize that each of the important scenes from Goodfellas draws from this one video. "I want to stir the sauce" Also other movies Scorsesse made can be attributed to some of the discussions they are having here. His mother was definitely a strong influence on his films, and that is a great thing!
Why does Martin Scorsese mother sound like Sophia Petrillo?🤣♥️
This was so wonderful to see, reminds me of my mother and grandmothers...... miss them so much. thank you for posting this on youtube, bring back many fond, precious memories.
Same. My Italian grandmother from NYC. She was born 1911, Brooklyn passed away. Stories of the iceman coming down the Street to deliver blocks of ice.
Yes same with me, brings back memories of my grandparents and Aunts and Uncles too. Many have passed on but I'll always have great memories growing up back then listening to them tell stories about their lives. Miss those days now more than ever before.
i love the footage from the streets back then, people would sit around outside a lot and kids would play outside, so the neighborhoods were so lively. I was lucky enough to have experienced that kind of childhood, probably the last few generations that did grow up outside the house. I miss this because we don't have a sense of community anymore, unless you live in the projects, chances are you don't know 90% of the people who live on your street
That’s matriarchal family. Unless you live there you won’t get it. Bringing flowers to your wife or mother doesn’t mean anything unless you’re living that lifestyle 365 days a year Btw, Scorsese’s Mom is amazing 🤗😘❤️🥳
What a GEM! Thank you for this offering. 💚
She's such a beautiful person
They’re adorable
Forget about it. 21:00
these are 52 year old people. crazy.
Beautiful HD version. thankyou for the upload!!
I love to see the Italians americans round the table eating and drinking wine ❤
Hvala opet Joža
BUT ITS MUCH NICER IN A ITALIAN 😄😁😁
What an annoying attention seeker, clearly didn’t like anyone else talking. Constantly glancing around to make sure she’s the only one being heard.
What a terrible woman
The eternal battle: Woman: Why don’t you ever talk to me ? Man: What do you want me to say ? Woman: ☹️😖😣😠😖
This takes me back to my childhood and my Sicilian relatives.
17:30 24:05
I was not an intellectual kid but I knew at the age of twelve that Gene Shalit was an idiot. And even earlier, when watching "A Shot In The Dark" on tv, that Sellers was performing comedy in a world that was somehow not a part of this one.
My grandma used to put plastic over the couch too. I have plastic over my couch because I have dogs. This woman reminds me of my mom. My dad was the boss though.
Just love her and Marty.
